What I told my graduate class yesterday was that if you ever need a pick-me-up, bring in a graphic novel. She's looking for authors who wield language intentionally, and manuscripts that she can't put down because she's swept up in the high stakes, the compelling voice, the original world building, and/or the character-driven humor. You see, two decades ago, there were a few obvious answers -- because there simply wasn't a lot more that was both good and readily available.

Earlier this year, Russ Kick gave us the the first installment of his Graphic Canon trilogy, which culls illustrated adaptations of 190 classic literary works from more than 130 contemporary graphic artists. In practice, however, it is important to keep in mind that many people consider an image to be far more powerful in its impact than any written description of that image. Just be sure to read it in a well lit room. You never know what might be creeping up behind you.

i would like to read the Muhammed Ali book. Photographs are run through a program where they are altered to look like drawings. This approach, he argued, made it possible for him to build on students’ interests and use comic books “constructively as a stepping stone to a lasting interest in good literature” (p. 142). Maberry's story works very well, and in the middle, pairs up two of my favorite Marvel characters, Wolverine and Deadpool. Each teaches five themes, five literary skills, and five comprehension strategies.

However, the article presents evidence that while the genre has expanded rapidly and has garnered incredible immediate publicity, the art form does not seem to be a short-lived one. Black Hole definitely isn’t a kids’ comic—graphic images of nudity and drug use appear throughout the book—but mature readers should appreciate this haunting coming-of-age tale. The book does have many elements of humor (for example, the main character, a male model, thinks that Global Warming is a type of shampoo) and I found it to be an enjoyable read, but it is definitely up there as one of the most disturbing books I have ever read.
